This expressive red features cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and orange peel aromas and flavors. Mineral and wild herb accents add depth as this cruises to the long finish, offering terrific balance and length. Though impressive now, this should evolve nicely. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is fabulous. Vibrant and translucent in the glass, it offers so much pedigree. Dark cherry, leather, licorice, tabacco and lavender are some of the many nuances that open in the glass. Readers will find a decepively mid-weight Riserva endowed with notable poise.

The Riserva at Volpaia is made by a selection in the best vineyard parcels, which are typically higher spots with poor soils, giving more elegant wines. Although it is made from pure Sangiovese, it has rich dark cherry fruit, reflecting this warm, dry vintage, with freshening tones of cola, quinine and orange peel. There is evident volume on the palate with relatively opaque crimson cherry fruit but soaring acidity. Lovely, grippy wood-shaving tannins have a fine cohesiveness, tapering gently on the back to close off the shape and leaving a fresh sylvan perfume of juniper and cedar.

Selected from southeast- to southwest-facing plots rising from 400 to 600 metres, the harvest in 2021 was prolonged, with Riserva grapes brought in between the end of September and mid-October. The wine emerges with palpable yet attractive wood spice and vanilla notes along with an equal measure of pure red cherry. The palate brings in irony mineral and earthy jasmine nuances. Elegantly weighted and unmistakably sophisticated with smooth tannins, this rings out with tangy acidity.

A textured, driven and flavorful riserva with aromas of dark cherries, wild currants, dried herbs and some stones. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Focused and precise, with a velvety core of succulent cherries at the center and a solid and harmonious frame of tannins. Lively and flavorful finish with excellent length. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This riserva, coming from across Volpaia’s high-altitude estate (400m [1,310ft] and above) with a predominantly sandstone geology, speaks very eloquently of pure Sangiovese, despite 2021’s hot, arid conditions. It remains quite quiet on the nose even after sitting for several minutes, reflecting its maturation in large oak vessels. It gradually yields subtle hints of morello cherry fruit and dried thyme. The opening is sensuous and sheer, its oily volume offset by fierce acidity. Subtle hints of tart cherry and bitter almond are intermingled with a refining oolong-tea and orange-rind quality, but all remains very understated. The perfectly proportioned, lens-shaped structure seems ready to withstand the ages, even if the flavours aren’t yet quite ready to emerge.

Si sa ben delineare al palato convincendo con un ottimo fruttato e una superba vena acida. Autorevole, elegante, vibrante. Bellissima dimensione e progressione.

Mostra un bel temperamento olfattivo, giocato tra affumicature e peonie, ravvivate da sentori di arancia rossa. Al palato ricchezza e dinamicità acida dialogano perfettamente in un lungo andirivieni di polpa e slancio che trova solidità nei tannini fitti e levigati.

Rosso rubino. Il complesso spettro olfattivo si articola con sensazione di frutta matura sotto spirito, spezie e note tostae che sfociano in un sorso morbido e dal nobile tannino.
