The vineyards for the Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Sangiovese (40%) and Merlot (20%) for Prelius are located on a hilltop along the shores of the coastal lake for which it is named. Aromas of leather, graphite and plum skins indicate its dark nature. Juicy, with firm tannins, violets and cinnamon spice offer a luxurious flavor profile and a distinct mouthfeel.” - Meridith May, September 2019

Tiefes, sattes Rubinrot.

Galloni: The 2015 Prile is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot. It is also one of the finer wines I have tasted from Volpaia's Prelius estate. Dark and beautifully resonant on the palate, the 2015 opens up nicely with a bit of time in the glass, revealing hints of black cherry, chocolate, licorice and espresso. Drink it over the next decade.

Rubino molto intenso. Profumi mediterranei, di resina poi di aarena e mirtillo, accenni boisè in sottofondo. Sapore pieno e possente, tannini fitti ma soffici, caldo, ricco e persistente

Here's a new wine that will soon enter the market. Volpaia's 2015 Maremma Toscana Prelius Castelprile is a dark and softly layered Tuscan blend that offers the intense fruity richness you can expect of warm-climate growing conditions. The wine is composed of 40% Sangiovese, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot aged in oak for 18 months. Fruit comes from a 12-hectare plot with sandy soils and some heavier clay mixed within. Dark cherry, blackberry and mild spice lift with intensity from the bouquet. I preview-tasted the wine from a label-less bottle because the wine's definitive name has not yet been confirmed

With its full, oaky nose and essence-like, sweet fruit, this warm and generous red has plenty of healthy tannins but finishes slightly sweet. With slightly less ripeness this would rate even higher. Drink now.

A blend of organically grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot, this offers dark berry, toasted oak and mocha aromas. The dense palate delivers blackberry jam, espresso and clove alongside firm tannins. Drink through 2024. KERIN O’KEEFE

History of wine

The family selection of our best Barriques.
Prelius was the ancient Maremma Toscana, an ancient salty lake where the Etruscans first and the Romans later used to produce salt and breed fishes. The floods of the Ombrone river have filled the Prelius lake and created the fertile soil of the Maremma Toscana. Here is where the Benedictine Monks have established their Abbey and started to grow grapes, more precisely in the district of Prile, the modern name of Prelius exactly where we grow our vines.
