| The 2021 vintage began with a rather hot March which was followed by a sharp drop in temperature at the beginning of April. Fortunately, this did not cause much damage to the buds. April and May were characterised by lower than average temperatures and plenty of rain. Summer was very hot and there was very little rainfall. From mid-August temperatures became milder with little rain continuing. The harvest began slightly earlier than usual. |

Dunkel leuchtendes Rubinrot. In der Nase zunächst feine Würze, dann nach Preiselbeermarmelade, ein Hauch Siegellack, im Nachhall feine Kirscharomen sowie sanft nach kaltem Rauch. Am Gaumen sehr saftig und sehr strahlend, öffnet sich mit klarer Frucht und edlen Gewürznuancen, auch auf feinen balsamischen Tönen, zeigt sich sehr elegant mit weiterem Reifepotenzial.

This dark, brooding red is also ripe, offering smoky black cherry, blackberry, iron and leafy tobacco flavors. Tightly wound, with rigid tannins that need to be absorbed, yet the lasting impression is sweet fruit. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2038. 450 cases imported. — BS

Tar and crushed stone on the nose, together with black cherries and violets. Medium-bodied with tight, firm tannins that run the length of the wine. Fresh and vivid at the end. Sangiovese and cabernet. From organically grown grapes. Try this in a year or two, when it will have opened.
Shortly after its release in 1985, Balifico was awarded the label Supertuscan.

History of wine
Balifico, mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon for Volpaia’s Supertuscan.
The first Supertuscans were created in the 1970s by Chianti Classico producers who rejected a restrictive government regulation that dictated which grapes were required to go into wines labeled as from the region.
As such, to identify those with superior quality, the international press informally introduced the term: Supertuscan. Nevertheless these high quality wines were soon acclaimed by the International press as Supertuscans.
